Police boss refutes report ranking Kenya police third worst globally

Nairobi County Police Boss Japheth Koome has strongly dismissed a report, ranking the Kenya Police Service as third worst in the world.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Koome termed the 2016 World Internal Security and Police Index (WISPI) report released on Saturday, as false and malicious.

Koome, instead, remained upbeat that the Kenya’s police service is among the best.

“Kenya police ranked third last in the world is not true. We are among the best in the world,” said Koome.

One of the facets WISPI measures across 127 countries globally is the ability of a police service to address security issues in a country, based on four areas of capacity, process, legitimacy and outcomes.

The report released by the International Police Science Association and the Institute for Economics and Peace, ranked Botswana as best police service in Africa and position 47 globally.

Rwanda was second best in Africa and 50th globally, followed by Algeria (58th), Senegal (68th) and Tunisia (72nd).

This comes amid several human rights reports claiming that police in Kenya killed more than 30 people in the period after the August 8 election. All the reports have specifically accused the security agencies, which are meant to maintain law and order, of using excessive force while quelling protests by opposition supporters.
