Police boss wants a firing squad formed to execute death sentence offenders

Embu West Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD), Francis Sang, has proposed that a firing squad mandated to execute death sentence offenders be formed.

Speaking during the public participation at a Town Hall meeting on Friday, November 11 when the Presidential Power of  Mercy Advisory  Committee visited, Sang said that there is need to retain the death sentence in order to deal with criminals who continue to kill innocent Kenyans.

The police boss noted that officers witness first hand the cruelty the criminals subject their victims to thus the need for them also to face the reality of their cruelty should they be found capable.

Sang said that the law should be adhered to and the suspect given all the opportunities to prove their innocence but should they exhaust the legal avenues, then they should be put on a firing squad.

The OCPD also called for a quicker execution process saying that keeping them for long is a burden to the tax payer.

The Presidential Power of  Mercy Advisory  Committee was in Embu seeking the views of the public on capital offences’ punishment whether to retain the death sentence or abolish it with the majority of the participants calling for its retention.

On his part, Michael Kagika, Presidential Power of  Mercy Advisory  Committee Secretary, said that the move to seek public participation was in line with the Constitution before the implementation of laws.
