Police camp under siege from armed bandits

An unknown number of heavily armed bandits suspected to be cattle rustlers on Friday night cordoned off Rugus Administration Camp in Baringo County, raising tension in the community residing in the area.

General Service Unit (GSU) officers dispatched to rescue their colleagues besieged inside the camp bore no fruits after the bandits repulsed them.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, an Illchamus human rights activist Amos ole Mpaka said local residents were fleeing the area fearing for their lives.

Mr Mpaka urged security bosses to order more reinforcements to avoid a situation similar to the Kapedo massacre.

The attackers, reportedly targeting newly created police camps in the area, are said to be heavily armed and organized into groups of hundreds.

The recent incident has occurred a day after eight Administration Police officers were attacked on Thursday at Noosukro, with one sustaining serious injuries and Rapid Deployment Unit vehicles torched.

During the Thursday attack on the officers who were on routine patrol, eight officers were forced to scamper to safety after they were ambushed by the heavily armed bandits who are now targeting newly established police camps.

The injured officer was rushed to Nairobi for specialized treatment after sustaining injuries on both legs during the attack.

Local residents are condemning the local area MP Asman Kamama for not castigating the current wave of assault on security officers despite heading National Assembly’s powerful security committee.
