Police constable arrested over alleged extortion of Langata bar operators

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal investigations( DCI) on Friday arrested a police constable for allegedly extorting money from bars and wine & Spirit shops in Langata.

According to the DCI, the suspect, Cosmas Mwema, who is attached to the Nyayo Police Post was in the habit of going into almost all of the said outlets every Friday exorting money from the operators.

Those who failed to give him money were threatened with arrest.

This comes barely two days after yet another constable from Kamukunji Police Station was arrested and charged with assaulting two officers at the National Treasury offices and extortion.

Daniel Arimba Arioba was arraigned on Friday for allegedly threatening to arrest Mohammed Kiptirim arap Cheboi over claims of forging his appointment letter.

It is alleged that on July 24, together with Oliver Tambo who is still at large, Arioba extorted Ksh. 200,000 from Cheboi over the letter linked to the African Disaster Response and Virus Research Foundation.

He pleaded with the court to release him on affordable cash bail as he apparently earns only Ksh.20,000 per month.

The Magistrate released him on a Ksh.40,000 cash bail.

Mwema is expected to be arraigned in Court on Monday.
