Police destroy half-acre bhang farm in Migori

Police in Migori County have destroyed over three tones of green bhang that was uprooted from a farm in Boda area along the border of Kenya and Tanzania in Suna West Sub County on Sunday evening.

Confirming the incident, Migori County commissioner Mr Seif Matata said the green bhang, which has a street value of over Ksh1Million, was planted on a half acre piece of land by one of the suspects who escaped to Tanzania.

Mr Matata said they got a tip off about the green bhang that was growing on an open field in the homestead of a suspect who the locals say has been claiming to be mentally unstable.

“We would like to thank the members of the public for the information that led to us finding the bhang,” he said.

The county commissioner said they suspect that drug traffickers in Migori have embarked on cultivating their own bhang after the police blocked all routes through which they have been ferrying bhang from the neighboring country, Tanzania where the cultivation of bhang is legalised.

“This is just the beginning, we will find more farms where bhang is planted and destroy it,” he said.

He, however, maintained that the county security team is alert and they will ensure that bhang is neither cultivated nor sold in Migori County.

Echoing his statement, Migori County Police Commander Mr David Kirui said they are still pursing the suspect who escaped to Tanzania and urged members of the public to continue working closely with the police to combat drug trafficking and other issues.
