Police hunting for ex-MP George Nyanja after firing at demolition crew

Police in Nairobi are looking for former Limuru Member of Parliament George Nyanja after he fired his gun in an attempt to allegedly stop the demolition of some business premises in Karen.

According to eyewitnesses, bulldozers from City Hall, arrived at the business premises in the leafy suburbs of Karen on Wednesday afternoon and started bringing down the structures.

It is then that Nyanja arrived, an argument ensued and it was then that he allegedly shot in the air forcing the county workers to scamper to safety.

According to Nairobi County’s Chief Media Officer Elkana Jacob, the premises were constructed without approval from the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG) and area residents were also opposed to the development.

“The county government had given the owners of all illegal structures from Embakasi to Karen and when they did comply with the orders, we moved in today,” he said.

Mr. Elkana said that some of the workers sustained minor injuries as they fled scene after the gun shots.

“This is a heinous act done in broad daylight, shame on them and shame on him,” added Elkana.

“My staff have sustained injuries as they scampered for safety and psychological torture. We have recorded a statement at the Karen police station and we invite the DCI and Kenya Police to quickly arrest the individual for misuse of a firearm.”
