Police introduce daytime alcoblow tests to curb road carnage

Whatever you do this festive season moving forward, do not drink and drive no matter the time. This is after the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet announced the launch of daytime Alco-blow check on the roads.

According to Boinnet, the move to crackdown on daytime drink driving is aimed at reducing road carnage especially during the festive season.

“It is really aimed at getting rid of drunks hitting the road early morning while still groggy and not being in full charge of their faculties, hence risk killing themselves, or worse still murdering other innocent people,” said Boinnet.

This move will catch many by surprise as the breathlayser tests are commonly carried out at night and still faces a lot of opposition.

In April, 2017, Appeal judges GBM Kariuki, Festus Azangalala and Fatuma Sichale ruled that that the law that introduced the alcoblow was illegal because it violated the Traffic Act.

But the National Transport and Safety Authority boss Francis Meja said that following the ruling, the agency will use a different section of the law to charge the drivers.

NTSA said it will apply Section 44 (1) of the Traffic Act which outlaws anyone from driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
