Police nab bhang worth thousands

Administration police have impounded bhang worth more than Sh90,000 at Maua Town in Igembe South, Meru County.

Police say they identified a man who was carrying a suspicious sack, however, the man ran away when police tried to interrogate him about what he was carrying, leaving his sack behind.

Area divisional AP Commander Abdirahim Ghulia has said the AP officers dressed in civilian clothing found 45 stones of bhang in the sack and have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

Area Assistant County Commissioner Lillian Njagi has called on locals to provide information leading to nabbing of more drugs and other illegal commodities.

The seizure of the illegal drug comes at a time when the government is conducting a countrywide crackdown on illicit brew.

The government has sacked 22 administrative and security officers accused of working with illicit liquor brewers and manufacturers of second-generation alcohol.

Among the officers sacked are those from Kiambu (8), Muranga (4), Nyandarua (4), Naivasha (2) and Nyeri (4).

The decision come just hours after Interior Cabinet Secretary Major Gen. (rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery put all chiefs, assistant chiefs and security officials on notice in the fight against illicit brew.

In his speech during a fact-finding mission in areas notorious for illicit liquor and second-generation brews, Nkaissery said that security personnel should be on the forefront in implementing the president’s directive to root out illegal alcohol.

The war against illicit liquor brew began on Thursday, a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta banned second-generation brews.

Speaking after meeting leaders from Central Kenya, President Kenyatta further directed a crackdown on all outlets selling illicit liquor, adding that a report of the same should be handed to him during the next meeting.
