Police nab coffee beans worth Ksh.1.5 million smuggled from Tanzania

Police officers in Kajiado on Tuesday seized 270 bags of coffee beans valued at Ksh.1.5 million that had allegedly been smuggled from Tanzania.

Confirming the incident, Kajiado Central OCPD Daudi Lonyorokwe said the coffee beans are believed to have been sneaked into the country thorough the porous border of Namanga.

The goods were being ferried in a lorry registration number KCA 206D heading to Nairobi.

The police boss said the driver of the lorry, Stephen Njuguna, had been arrested and taken to Kajiado Police Station as investigations continue.

According to the OCPD, the driver could not produce the required documents at the time of the arrest.

The government is on high alert over tax evasion through smuggling of goods into the country by unscrupulous traders.

Earlier this month, six lorries were impounded in Uasin Gishu County ferrying Lato milk believed to have been illegally shipped into the country.

The lorries were found carrying 13,000 cartons of milk estimated to be worth Ksh.7 million.
