Police nab illicit brew in Laikipia’s Shemanek forest

Police in Nyahururu, Laikipia County have arrested three people in connection with the production and sale of illicit liquor in the area.

The three were arrested at Shemanek forest while brewing the illicit brew. Police managed to confiscate 500 litres of the Kangara brew and several substances used in the making of the liquor.

The operation, which was led by Nyahururu District Administration Police Commander, Daniel Masaba, Mutitu location Chief, Eston Maina and his Kiamaina counterpart, Joseph Waithaka, said that operation will continue until the illicit brew menace is addressed.

Speaking shortly after the operation, Masaba said the three had relocated their brewing base to the forest after a series of operations in Maina slums where they lived noting that members of the public are assisting them with crucial leads in the fight against the illicit brews and second generation alcohol.

“We had to walk for hours before we got into their brewing base and they were all shocked since it is 20 kilometers deep into the forest,” said Masaba. “The man tried to escape but we managed to arrest him.”

Last week, police officers pounced on illegal brews being distilled atop trees in the same forest during a raid.
