Police net ethanol worth Ksh 120 million

Police in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County have confiscated 445,000 litres of ethanol and hides of unknown value along the Taveta-Mwatate Road.

The ethanol was packaged in 180 plastic drums and packed into two bog containers and was estimated at Ksh 120 million street value.

Mwatate OCPD, James Mwangi, said that police confiscated the cargo following tip-off from members of the public.

He said that a driver of one of the trucks managed to escape after he was ordered by police to stop along the Mwatate-Taveta Road.

Thanking members of the public, he said that regular patrol by police along the road had started to bear fruits where several sacks of bhang had been netted.

Police further say that the containers are being kept under tight security at Mwatate Police Station and that the owners still remain mysterious.

They believe that the cargo was smuggled into the country from Tanzania through the Taveta border point.

Security agents in the area are calling upon members of the public with any information that may led to the arrest of the cargo owners to come out.
