Police officer commits suicide in Nyeri

A police officer committed suicide on Saturday evening in Othaya, Nyeri County following domestic issues after he was interdicted from service.

Police constable John Ngatia Maina, who was based at Mpeketoni police station in Lamu County, hanged himself with a scarf in their house at Konyu village in Nyeri.

According to his family members, the deceased was interdicted in March 2017 after a quarrel with a colleague at his work station.

“He had been following up the matter to have it resolved for him to return back to work but it has been a back and forth. He became frustrated recently when he stopped receiving his salary,” said his brother-in-law Dennis Mutitu.

The late officer has left behind an 8-month old baby.

Mutitu dismissed reports by police that the deceased had a quarrel with his wife before committing suicide.

The body of the deceased officer was moved to the Mukurweini Sub-county Hospital mortuary.
