Police officer killed, 3 others injured by bandits in Samburu

A police officer was killed and three others injured on Tuesday evening by armed bandits in Marti area, Samburu County.

Samburu County Police Commander Karanja Muiruri said the four officers were among a group of more than 50 police officers who had been deployed to rescue two children were abducted during a cattle raid that also saw over 50 heads of cattle stolen in Suyan, Samburu North.

The police commander said the officers managed to rescue the children on Monday but resolved to suspend efforts to recover the cattle when night fell.

The officers traced and recovered the animals on Tuesday afternoon but were ambushed by armed bandits.

“…Yesterday the sub county commander and his team traced the footsteps to a place where they recovered the stolen livestock, while on their way with those cattle to Marti Police Station they were ambushed.

“This forced them to engage the raiders in a gun fire exchange up to 6pm, unfortunately we have lost one of our inspector and we have three casualties,” said the county commander.

The injured were admitted to Samburu County Referral Hospital in Maralal town.

On Wednesday, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr. Silas Lodoke said the victims sustained various injuries but are in stable condition.
