Police officer killed as angry mob rescues suspect in Nairobi

A police officer attached to Kariobangi station was on Tuesday killed at Kisumu Ndogo, Korogocho slum in Nairobi by an irate mob that was trying to rescue a suspect.

According to police, the officer was in the company of his colleague when they attempted to arrest a suspect, who raised an alarm attracting an angry crowd.

The locals hurled stones at the officers, hitting one of them who died on the spot while the other managed to escape.

“It’s quite unfortunate we’ve lost one officer who was involved. There was a bit of chaos after a suspect who was resisting arrest raised alarm to which residents responded by engaging the police officers in a battle that saw one officer hit with a stone on the head and died on the spot,” said an officer, who declined to be named.

Security officers have since been deployed to the area to hunt down the suspect and those involved in the attack.
