Police officer on trial for corruption arrested again taking bribes

A Nairobi police officer who is on trial for corruption charges was on Monday arrested again by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) while allegedly taking bribes near City Stadium, Nairobi.

In a statement, the anti-graft body said Corporal Dan Mburu was nabbed with Ksh.3,250 in his pockets during a sting operation conducted at the City Stadium area on Jogoo Road.

“The officers of the Commission, did a search and a total of Ksh. 3250/= in various denominations was recovered from his pockets. Interestingly, the same police officer was arrested in another sting operation on 17th November 2017 and charged before Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on 29th November 2017. The case is still ongoing,” said the EACC.

The anti-graft body said when Mburu was arrested in 2017, it communicated the matter to the Deputy Inspector General (Kenya Police) on November 30, 2017 for his interdiction as per section 62(1) of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act. 2003.

However, according to EACC, Mburu claims that the information on interdiction has never been communicated to him.

The officer was taken to the Integrity Centre for interrogation before facing fresh charges.

“The arrested officer is at Integrity Centre where he is undergoing interview and statement recording. An inquiry file has been opened to gather more evidence,” said EACC.
