Police officer remanded for allegedly killing shamba boy in Nyeri

An administration police officer has been remanded for seven days at the King’ong’o Maximum Prison for allegedly killing his shamba boy.

Martin Thumbi, an administration police officer, was arrested on Thursday for the murder of  25-year-old Patrick Mukaru.

In a recorded statement, Thumbi alleged that the deceased had attempted to defile his daughter at their home at Ngaini village in Mathira constituency.

According to the police report, the officer alleged that the shamba boy was then attacked by irate residents.

He further claimed that he took him to Karatina Level Four Hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

However, the Director of Public Prosecution recommended that he be arrested after it was established that the officer assaulted the deceased, causing fatal injuries.

On Friday, Ms Martha Ndungu for the Prosecution sought to have the plea taking deferred to April 4, 2019.

According to her, the accused did not have legal representation and had not yet undergone mental assessment as required by law.

Justice Jairus Ngaa ruled that the suspect be remanded at King’ong’o prison until April 5, 2019.

The suspect had however pleaded to be released on bond but the court ruled that bail hearing will done after plea taking.

The judge further directed that the suspect undergo mental assessment and be provided with a State lawyer.
