Police officer shoots girlfriend in Meru

A manhunt is underway for a police officer who shot and injured his girlfriend on Saturday night in Igembe North, Meru County.

According to a police report on the incident, the officer identified as constable David Nyamwea shot 23-year-old Everlyne Njoki on the right side of the cheek outside Laare Police Station canteen.

It could not be immediately established what caused the officer to shoot the girlfriend.

An officer who witnessed the 9.30pm incident told police that in the process of administering first aid to the victim, the said assailant managed to escape to an unknown destination.

“…a combined team of police officers have been mobilised and are searching for him,” said police.

The firearm used in the shooting and 9 spent cartridges were collected at the scene.

The victim was rushed to Maua Methodist Hospital in a critical condition.
