Police officer shot after gunmen attack Meru-Isiolo border station

A police officer was shot and injured by armed bandits in Lowangila area at the border of Isiolo and Tigania West in Meru County.

Confirming the incident, Isiolo Police Commander Charles Onita said the officer was shot in the head after three assailants attacked Lowangila police post. The injured officer was rushed to the Isiolo County Referral Hospital.

According to Mr Onita, the gunmen had raided the police station with an intention of taking away nine cows that were being held at the station amid an ongoing investigation into an earlier cattle rustling incident.

Four of the nine cows had been positively identified by their owners, with a probe still ongoing to identify owners of the remaining five.

The gunmen, who escaped after the incident, did not manage to steal the animals.

Police from around the region have since launched a manhunt for the assailants.
