Police officers arrested over brew bribery

Two Administration Police officers from Maua police station have been arrested after allegedly extorting a 20,000 shillings bribe from bar owners in Kiguma, Meru county.

According to one of the businessmen, Sabina Kithure, the two officers came Monday night and demanded to see their licenses which they displayed but instead demanded for the bribe as protection fee from the alleged crackdown on illicit brews.

It is then that they contacted the OCPD who disowned the operation by the two saying that it (operation) had not been sanctioned by his office.

He immediately sent officers to arrest the two and a probox vehicle they were using was also impounded.

They are set to appear in court on Tuesday over corruption charges.

This comes as the crackdown on illicit brews entered the 5th day with thousands of litres of alcohol destroyed and millions of properties destroyed amidst the looting and chaos on second generation liquor.
