Police officers in City Park shooting to remain in custody

The two Administration Police officers charged over the controversial shooting at City Park in Parklands area, Nairobi are set to remain in police custody after the court denied them bail.

Administration Police Constable William Chirchir from Makadara Police Station and his colleague Godfrey Kirui of Industrial Area Police Station denied killing businesswoman Janet Waiyaki during the May 20, 2018 incident.

The prosecution urged the court not to grant bail for the two officers who are facing murder charges, further opposing an application to have the Investigating Officer cross examined by the two accused persons.

The two face a separate charge at the Magistrate Court for the attempted murder of Bernard Chege who survived the shooting.

Meanwhile, a human rights body, International Justice Mission (IJM), has also been allowed to participate in the trial on behalf of the victims.

The hearing of the case was pushed to Tuesday next week awaiting a pre-bail report.

The officers are accused of firing 15 bullets into a vehicle that Ms. Wangui and Bernard Chege were in.

Ms Wangui, 41, succumbed to gunshot wounds while Mr. Chege, 26, was left fighting for his life in hospital.
