Police probing incident in which a 4-month-old baby died while mother was partying next door

Police in Kirinyaga County are investigating an incident in which a 4-month-old baby girl died under mysterious circumstances in Gitoo-ini village, Kirinyaga county.

The baby’s mother was drinking beer at her male neighbour’s  house in the company of a local pastor’s wife when the incident happened,

Confirming the incident, Mwea-west sub-county police commander Aden Alio said the matter was reported to the Kangai police post by Thomas Chomba- the deceased’s uncle.

Speaking after the incident, the 35-year-old Sarah Waruguru who is the mother of the deceased said she had been invited for a beer by her neighbour Mathew Waweru.

She was accompanied to the soiree by a local pastor’s wife only identified as ‘WaJohn’.

‘Mathew told me to make sure ‘Wajohn’ accompanies me to his house, and he even gave me Ksh.50 to buy her one,” she said.

Waruguru who has since recorded a statement over the matter said they had been drinking since 8am on Saturday and only paused when they had downed all the beers.

Further, she claims that the pastor’s wife handed her Ksh.1,000 and asked her to replenish their beers at the nearby Kariu shopping centre.

When she came back with the beers, she found her daughter foaming at the mouth and quickly informed her drinking buddies.

“They were ‘sleeping’ when I came back and after I told them my daughter was not responding, they ran away,” she added.

Mwea-west police boss says police will proceed with their investigations after a post-mortem scheduled for Monday.

The three have since recorded statements at the Kangai police station pending investigation into the death that has left local residents shell shocked.
