Police recover AK47 rifle stolen from AP officer in Kisumu

Police in Kisumu on Sunday night recovered an AK47 rifle that had been stolen from an Administration Police Officer last week at Kibos area in Kisumu East Sub-county.

According to a police report, officers drawn from the Quick Response Team (QRT) and Crime Unit responded to a distress call in Kanyakwar area where armed robbers had struck.

The officers are said to have ambushed the gang of three armed with the stolen rifle who were trailing a business woman.

After a dramatic chase that was characterized by fierce exchange of fire, the suspects were overwhelmed and escaped to a nearby thicket around Uzima University leaving behind the weapon and 26 rounds of ammunition.

During the Sunday night incident several phones were also recovered.

The AP officer who was manning the Kenya Bureau Of Standards offices in Kibos area was left with serious injuries during the attack that led to him being admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital.

Kisumu residents are now living in fear following rising cases of armed robbery in the area.
