Police, Senate under pressure to arrest, unseat Senator Muthama

Pressure continues to mount on the police to arrest Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama with activists staging demonstrations in Nairobi streets to protest his remarks during a Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) rally on Wednesday that have been termed as inflammatory.

Over 500 protesters carrying placards with anti-Muthama slogans converged at Uhuru Park grounds and proceeded to the Parliamentary grounds to pressure Senate and the National Assembly to eject him on the grounds that he has flouted Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 on integrity.

The women have accused Senator Muthama of undermining them by accusing Devolution and Planning Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Muthama is said to have termed Ms Waiguru as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s favourite CS despite being embroiled in graft allegations in the National Youth Service where over Ksh 700 million was lost through questionable procurement process.

Muthama is also accused of alleging that the CS also has an affair with the Head of State and called for her removal from office.

The protesters, predominantly women, want Muthama to apologize, be arrested and prosecuted for undermining a public officer, especially women, lest they will initiate a public arrest.

They (protesters) say that they will camp outside the Senate for at least seven days until Muthama is apprehended and arraigned in a court of law.

They have also petitioned the Senate to initiate the process of the Senator’s removal saying that he is not fit to hold a public office as he has continuously made remarks that are considered inciting.

Friday morning, Interior CS Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery ordered for investigations into the remarks by the Senator.

According to the letter signed by Nkaissery from Texas, U.S., “Mr. Muthama has made a habit of verbally attacking state officers in a manner that is intended to undermine cohesion and national unity for political gain”.

The letter reads in part; “Such conduct should not be confused for the rights of expression that every Kenyan is guaranteed. It is, therefore, imperative that investigations into the speech and its intent begin in earnest.”
