Police still hunting down directors of Sukari industries

Police in Migori are still holding nine trucks that were intercepted in Rongo town, Migori County while ferrying suspected counterfeit sugar on Wednesday, June 20.

Rongo OCPD Kisaka Muganda said the police are pursuing the directors of Sukari Industries, the company where the consignment was reportedly being shipped to.

Mr. Muganda said none of the company’s directors had showed up to record a statement with the police, adding that they are still looking for them as they await a laboratory report on the sugar.

The OCPD added that they are yet to arrest anyone over the suspected counterfeit sugar asserting that the directors of Sukari Industries should be the people held responsible.

The nine trucks were intercepted by Migori County Inspection Officer along the Rongo-Homabay highway while ferrying 4,720 bags of suspected counterfeit sugar.

Meanwhile, political leaders from Migori County and the locals continue to pile pressure on the government to revoke licenses and prosecute milers involved in the import and sale of counterfeit sugar.

East Kanyamkago Ward Representative Bon Oremo has called on the government to arrest and prosecute millers and individuals involved in the illegal sugar business.
