One shot dead, three wounded as police rescue murder suspect in Mombasa

Police on Tuesday shot and killed a middle-aged man and injured three others in Miritini, Mombasa County.

37-year-old Hussein Nguta, a father of four, was killed by a stray bullet after police tried to disperse irate residents who were threatening to lynch a murder suspect.

The suspect had been arraigned in court three weeks ago for allegedly killing his elder brother. He was charged with murder at a Mombasa Court and released on bond.

However, on Tuesday he was accosted by angry residents who descended on him before police officers intervened to rescue him from a mob lynching.

Confirming the incident, Changamwe OCPD Peter Omanwa said the locals began attacking the police officers, prompting them to open fire, shooting the four locals with one of them succumbing to his injuries.

The three survivors were admitted at the Coast General Hospital.
