Police tracking 7 women known for circumcising girls in Migori
Police are monitoring seven women believed to be the perpetrators of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Kuria East constituency, Migori County as the period when most young girls undergo FGM draws nearer.
The deputy county commissioner of Kuria East sub county, Mr Westly Koech, said eight women have been identified as those mandated by the community to carry out FGM to Kuria girls during the December periods.
He said preliminary investigations have established that the women, three of whom are based in Kegonga and four in Ntimaru, do not have a central place to circumcise the girls and instead move door-to-door to dodge security officials.
The police in Kuria have managed to nab only one out of the established eight in the act and she is currently serving her jail term.
The DCC said they are well prepared to deal with the people promoting the vice so as to ensure that no girl undergoes FGM this year in the region.
Mr Oketch however explained to Citizen Digital that it has been hectic fighting FGM in the region since elders who are the opinion leaders in the community still value the outlawed cultural practice
He strongly emphasized that the anti-FGM law is clear on the penalties for FGM perpetrators, saying that he will work with the security personnel in the region to enforce it as stipulated without fear of favor.
