Police uniforms, weapons recovered at the University of Nairobi

Police have seized several weapons and police uniforms during a raid at one of the University of Nairobi’s halls of residence.

Private security uniforms, machetes and knives were also recovered during the six-hour operation at the campus.

In a statement to newsrooms, University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Mbithi said the police are gathering evidence for possible prosecution of students who participated in the unrest.

According to the school’s administration, the University’s Senate is in the final stages of discussions on disciplinary measures to be taken against student goons who participated in the destruction of public property during the riots.

“We are committed to protect the image of this University from being destroyed by a few bad apples,” read the statement in part.

Education CS accompanied by Interior CS Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery also held a meeting with the University’s administration after which they said that they echoed the varsity’s statement that investigations were still underway.

Speaking to the media at UoN, Matiang’i promised to issue a statement once investigations were concluded as well as a way forward.

At the same time, NACADA chairman John Mututho has called for investigations into the SONU leadership over the sale of drugs and drug abuse within the institution.

“As NACADA we have done our part and we are worried that no action has been taken against the people involved,” he said.

While addressing the press in Naivasha, Mututho termed drug menace in the country’s university as worrying adding that urgent measures needed to be taken.

He further praised Prof. Mbithi for admitting that drug abuse was there noting that it was about time to take necessary measures.

“The first step is to demolish all illegal structures next to all universities since they serve as drugs hubs.”

The former Naivasha MP called on the government to transform NACADA to be a control body to give it more powers to deal with cases of drugs and alcohol abuse.

“Currently all we can do is just raise awareness but if the authority is turned into control body then we can go for culprits instead of just raising alarms.”

Mututho further challenged the police, EACC and the Central Bank to investigate the source of the cash that the student leader has.

“We have seen this student leader issuing cash to students during elections and it’s sad that no government body has moved in to investigate the matter,” he said.

This come just two days after University of Nairobi VC admitted that cases of drug cartels at the institution are real as claimed by NACADA Chair John Mututho.

In an exclusive interview with Inooro TV, Mbithi revealed that cases of drug abuse and drug peddling at the university had already been reported to the police but no action has been taken so far.

This followed an order by the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett to NACADA chair John Mututho to record a statement with police over his claims that senior officers are protecting drug cartels at the University of Nairobi.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on last Thursday, Boinnet said “this is unacceptable and we take great exception to such reckless statements that are not based on facts but are clearly aimed at tarnishing the name of the police for reasons that are unknown to us.”

In his claim, the NACADA chairman fingered Central OCPD Paul Wanjama as one of the officers protecting the cartel that allegedly operates from the University of Nairobi’s Hall 9.

Mututho’s claims also come after security officers linked organized gangs to the violence that erupted over a disputed University of Nairobi SONU elections that saw the re-election of Babu Owino as the chairman.
