Police warn Marsabit politicians against fanning violence

The National Police Service has directed security agencies in Marsabit to deal with individuals inciting violence in the county.

In a statement posted on their official Facebook page, NPS however moved to assure Kenyans that the situation has been brought under control by the relevant security agencies.

“We have received disturbing information indicating that some politicians in Marsabit County are plotting to re-ignite the inter-communal clashes that plagued the county last month,” they said.

The Service directed security agencies deployed along the border of Elgeyo-Marakwet- West Pokot counties to take charge and deal with those responsible for cattle rustling which has resulted “in needless killings.”

“Available information indicates that the rustlers do not want the ongoing peace building efforts to succeed to allow them continue with their evil schemes,” read the statement.

“Security personnel in the area have been ordered to take the necessary measures to ensure that law and order is immediately restored.”

This directive comes barely a month after North Horr Member of Parliament Chachu Ganya and his Saku counterpart Ali Rasso were arraigned and charged with inciting violence in Marsabit County leading to the deaths of at least 14 people.

Hundreds of people have fled their homes in the affected areas, with 16 schools in villages such as Shur, Oronderi, Qubi qallo and Jaldesa being closed.

The fighting has been linked to politics, with some leaders said to be fanning violence as they position themselves for the 2022 elections.
