Police warn of plot to destroy ballot papers

The National Police Service has issued a stern warning to individuals allegedly planning to attack convoys that will be transporting ballot papers from the polling stations to constituency tallying centres after the election.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet said they have credible information including names of individuals behind the planned attacks.

“As the voting exercise comes to an end, ballot papers will be transported to Constituency Tallying Centres, for further tabulation. We are however getting disturbing information that some individuals are plotting to attack these convoys in some counties in order to undermine the electoral exercise,” read an official statement from the police.

“We wish to warn that anyone attempting to attack these convoys that are under heavy guard, will only have themselves to blame in the event stern action is taken by officers.”

Meanwhile, the electoral commission has postponed the repeat presidential election in Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya and Migori counties citing security-related challenges.

Addressing the media from Bomas of Kenya, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati has said the four counties will have the election on Saturday, October 28, 2017.
