Policeman caught on camera brutalising unarmed man identified

The armed police officer behind an assault video that went viral has been positively identified and is awaiting disciplinary action.

Speaking on phone, Police Spokesperson Charles Owino told Citizen Digital that the officer captured on the video clip is attached to Industrial Area Police Station.

Owino urges the individual who was assaulted to present himself to the Nairobi Area Police Commander and in the event he may feel intimidated or fearful, to present himself at Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to record a statement.

This will enable the prosecution of the officer involved and subsequent trial in a court of law, he added.

The victim, identified as Brian Ogutu, is an employee at Print Pak which is located several metres from the scene of the incident. He is said to have differed with a man who was in possession of iron rods along Likoni Road and a confrontation ensued which led to the two arguing before hell broke loose.

According to eye witnesses, the officer was angered after the suspect in the video hurled a stone at a moving car during the confrontation.

The family of the victim told Citizen Digital that he was taken to Makongeni Police Station before being released to seek medical attention.

They said he has since been discharged from hospital and is recuperating from home.

The one-minute video, shows the officer with his left boot on the victim’s neck as he grabs the man’s left hand.

The disturbing clip starts with the officer standing on the man with one boot on his neck while the other kicks him on the head repeatedly.

After relentless beating, the suspect then turns and lies on his tummy but this does not stop the assault as the officer proceeds to stand on his back while repeatedly kicking him at the back of his neck.

The brutal cop then stands on the man’s head with both his legs pinning his face down on the concrete floor before the victim rolls under a car while gesturing to the officer.

The video has since drawn sharp reactions from Kenyans online demanding for the arrest of the officer.

A tweet from IPOA has also appealed to anyone with information on the incident to contact for further investigations.
