Political parties must unite to select new IEBC commissioners – Midiwo

National Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Jakoyo Midiwo has called on all political parties to unite and select new Independent Election and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners to avoid a flawed General Election next year.

In an interview with Hot 96 News on Tuesday, Midiwo has said this will give all parties a chance to select their representatives hence providing full representation and ensuring transparency in the commission.

Midiwo also insisted IEBC must be disbanded given that most Kenyans have lost faith in it.

“When we choose the new commissioners there must be consensus between both Cord and Jubilee so that if one side tries to steal and betray Kenyans the other side can keep watch, that is not too much to ask and we must insist on it,” he said.

This comes as the Public Accounts Committee urged Parliament to reduce IEBC commissioners to three, change their mode of selection and separate their roles from that of the secretariat.

This, according to PAC in a report tabled last Wednesday, is crucial to ensure a free, fair and credible poll in 2017 and avoid the bitter disputes that have bedeviled the past two general elections.
