Political storm in Kisii over ODM leadership

A political battle is looming in Kisii County between ousted ODM branch chairman Chris Obure and another faction allied to Samuel Omwando.

Addressing the press in a Kisii hotel, Omwando said he is currently the ODM branch chairman and told former chairman Chris Obure to stop fooling the Kisii community since he doesn’t have the interest of the party at heart.

He said he has the blessings of the National Party Chairman John Mbadi who was present during the opening of the new ODM party offices in Kisii Town last week.

This comes after Kisii Senator Chris Obure was allegedly ousted from office by a group led by Samuel Omwando three weeks ago after accusing him of leading a rebel group that visited State House.

Omwando said Obure was removed from office after he infringed on the Political Parties Act Section 14 that says that one ceases to hold office after being perceived to promote activities of another party.

He accused Obure of claiming to be the ODM party chair during the burial of the wife of Simeon Nyachae on Monday, while still urging the Kisii community to rally their support behind the Jubilee Government.

He said Obure’s remark confuses the public and the Kisii community at large and therefore he cannot hold the position of chairman in the party.
