Politics is not about money, young aspirants say

Many young people are hesitant and deeply skeptical when it comes to venturing into politics, fearing they may not have the experience or the financial muscle to win against wealthier opponents.

However, the youngest Jubilee Party MP Gatobu Kinoti of Buuri constituency in Meru County says elections are determined not by money but in what candidates have to offer voters.

“You must have something that sets you apart from the rest, especially what have you done for the people. It may not be possible to do everything, but at least show them you have a love for the people, for God, and passionate about doing something positive for the community,” explains the first-time legislator Gatobu.

The Buuri  lawmaker is now urging youth to stand firm and own their future, emphasizing that young people can only actively change their lives through good governance and leadership if they contest  for elective seats.

“In Kenya, people tend to believe that the old and more established people make better leaders. The youth must change this perception,” said the Meru gubernatorial aspirant.

Kajiado senatorial hopeful, Caroline Wambui Chege, shared Kinoti’s sentiments calling upon the youth not to be swayed easily politically by the so called ‘able politicians’ but engage in reasonable and consultative politics.

“We need to leave the retrogressive cultures and move forward with progressive vision for the people,” said Chege.

Nonetheless, the two youthful politicians agree that entering politics needs financial muscle to cater for campaigns, funds which can be raised from friends and relatives.
