Pomp and colour as grannies dance Jamhuri Day away
There was pomp and colour as grannies from Gitunduti in Karatina Nyeri County celebrated this year’s 52nd Jamhuri day in style.
Led by Nairobi-based businessman Paul Mureithi, the grannies aged 80 and above were filled with joy and laughter as they danced to their favourite tunes courtesy of area musicians.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Mureithi lamented that the elderly have been neglected by their families as well as the government and are now left without proper health care.
“We decided to take this initiative in September this year after we noticed that most of the elderly are suffering,” said Mureithi.
He urged the government to remember the elderly by insuring them as most are affected by various diseases, with diabetes and arthritis being the most common.
He also challenged the county governments to work hand in hand with the national government to provide the elderly with a proper medical scheme, as most of them cannot afford proper health care.
During the colorful ceremony held at Gitunduti Primary School, the grannies also received various items donated by the group.
The grannies most of who were freedom fighters called on the government to reward them as they played a great role in the attainment of independence.
