Power company accused of buying land cheaply

Residents of Lower Yatta, Kitui County have accused the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) of duping them into selling their land at cheaper rates.

The residents claim the rates offered as compensation by the company were much lower than what they had initially priced their parcels of land.

According to one resident who sort anonymity, he had previously bought his land at Ksh 90,000, and had built a house at a cost of approximately Ksh 30,000, but the company had offered a Ksh 80,000 compensation.

“The money being offered is very little and I am not ready to take it,” he said.

The electricity company had in the recent months been digging up holes in the area in readiness for setting up of transmission lines from Masinga Dam to Mombasa through the Kitui village.

“The moment they started digging the holes, they didn’t inform me until I complained. That’s when they came with papers offering cheap payments for the land,” said another resident.

They claim that they use their land for subsistence farming and the KETRACO should compensate them decently.
