Power of Mercy committee underfunded – Vice Chair

The Power of Mercy and Advisory Committee (PMAC) vice chair Regina Saira now says that the committee is underfunded to cater for ex-convicts who have been rejected by the community after being pardoned.

Saira, who visited inmates at King’ong’o Prison in Nyeri, noted that the country has only two halfway homes for holding prisoners pardoned by the President.

She clarified that the committee needed sufficient funds to build more halfway homes under the programme for pardoned prisoners.

However, she stated that plans are underway to come up with a post-monitor release programme which will be used to resettle pardoned convicts in other parts of the country as well as to help them eradicate trauma.

She urged county governments and county commissioners from across the country to partner with them so as to facilitate smooth implementation of the programme.

She was accompanied by the committee’s CEO Michael Kagika.
