Powerful People Frustrating Mumias Sugar Revival

Central Organisation of Trade Union (Cotu) has claimed that there is a plot by people in government to frustrate efforts to bailout Mumias Sugar Limited.

In a statement signed by Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli, the union claimed that unnamed individuals are out to prevent the release of the Sh1 billion that the government promised the sugar firm, in order to ensure its collapse with the intention of buying it out.

“Apparently, strategically placed individuals within government are behind these very efforts, frustrating the release of the funds to Mumias Sugar,” read the statement in part.

“These individuals are already plotting to buy off the sugar firm upon its closure and eventual collapse.”

Cotu urged the government not to renege on its promise to bailout Mumias Sugar and help stabilise its operations.

DEPEND FOR LIVELIHOOD

The union further stated that the collapse of Mumias Sugar would affect over 500,000 families that depend on the sugar firm for their livelihood.

Cotu attributed their concerns to a similar “empty” promise made by the government to Pan Paper Mills in Webuye, which led to its eventual collapse.

“Cotu’s concerns are informed by similar promises by the government that led to the collapse of Pan Paper Mills in Webuye,” read the statement.

The workers’ union expressed fears that after the collapse of Mumias Sugar, Nzoia Sugar might be next, adding that it will be an uphill task to revive the plants once they collapse.

Cotu called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to directly intervene and ensure the funds are released so that operations at the company can return to normalcy.
