President Kenyatta arrives in Belgium for major EU event on development

President Uhuru Kenyatta has arrived in Brussels, Belgium, for a three-day visit during which he will deliver the keynote address at the European Development Days (EDD) and hold a series of bilateral talks on trade and security

In his address, President Kenyatta is expected to share Kenya’s experience with the European Union leaders as well as lay out Kenya’s perspectives on future partnerships and development cooperation.

The President is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral meetings with senior officials of the European Union including the President of the EU Jean Claude Juncker and the President of the European Council Donal Tusk.

Kenyatta will also hold close door meetings with both Prime Minister Michel and His Majesty King Phillipe.

The President will also lead bilateral discussions with the Belgium Government, address the Belgian Business Community and attend an EU–Africa event.

President Kenyatta is also scheduled to meet with the executives of the European Investment Bank (EIB), and to hold meetings with several other corporate leaders.

The European Union is Kenya’s second largest development and trading partner and a significant source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and tourist arrivals.

In 2005 the European Investment Bank (EIB) opened one of its three representation offices in Africa, in Nairobi.

Besides, the leaders of European countries other Heads of State and Government who are attending the European Development Days include the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Hailemariam Desalegn, President Bibi Ameenah Firdaus Gurib-Fakim of Mauritius, President Roch Marc Christian Kabore of Burkina Faso and President Faustin-Archange Touadera of Central African Republic.

Others are Prime Ministers Tuilaepa Malielegaoi (Samoa) and Rui De Arajuo (Timor-Leste).

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon and World Bank President World Bank, Jim Yong Kim, are also attending the EU event whose theme is “Sustainable Development Goals in Action: Our World, Our Dignity, Our Future”.
