President Kenyatta directs Gusii stadium be renamed after late Minister Simeon Nyachae

President has directed that the Gusii Stadium in Kisii County be renamed Simeon Nyachae Stadium in honour of the late Cabinet minister.

Speaking in Kisii at the funeral service of the late Nyachae, President Kenyatta said an additional Ksh.150 million will be allocated the Kisii County Government for the completion of the stadium before the end of this year.

“In his memory and in consultation with the leadership of Kisii County and to fortify our appreciation of this great son of Kenya, as a government we have considered it fit to rename this stadium to the Simeon Nyachae Stadium Kisii,” said Kenyatta.

“And to ensure that this stadium is completed by the end of this year and to international standards we will allocate an additional Ksh.150 million to the county government of kisii to have this stadium complete.”

The Head of State further directed that a sports academy be set up at the Nyanturago Stadium and be renamed Nyantika Maroro Sports Academy to nurture local talent in honour of the late Nyachae.

Family, friends and leaders at the funeral, who included Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga eulogised Nyachae as a disciplined public servant whose strict standards were upheld both in public and private life.

Political leaders at the funeral kept of politics.

Kisii Deputy Governor Joash Maangi, South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro and former Kisii Mayor Samuel Omwando were arrested over alleged plans to incite chaos at the service.

Mzee Nyachae died on February 1, 2021 at the Nairobi Hospital after a long illness. He was aged 88.
