President Kenyatta: Gov’t To Market Miraa

This is the message by President Uhuru Kenyatta gave to miraa farmers while visiting the area when on his second and final day of the Meru County tour.

President Kenyatta said that his government is negotiating with European countries to lift a ban they put on miraa one year ago.

The Head of State further urged miraa growers to diversify their farming activities even as negotiations on miraa markets continue.

The ban on miraa imposed by the European countries has affected more than 800, 000 produce growers in the area.

Miraa market in the neighbouring Somalia is also uncertain following reports that the East African country was preparing to ban it this year.

Kenyatta called on the farmers to work with agricultural extension officers on alternative cash crops to cushion them from the effects of the ban.

President Kenyatta was addressing residents of Kianjai, Kagaene, Mikunduri, Mutuati, and Lare areas who had turned up for his meeting.
