President Kenyatta hosts pardoned prisoners at State House

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday hosted the first batch of prisoners released under the presidential pardon of mercy at State House in Nairobi.

In his address, President Kenyatta advised the pardoned prisoners to stay away from crime and put into practice the skills learned in prison to lead productive lives.

The Head of State invoked the Power of Mercy and pardoned 66 prisoners as part of the 52nd Jamhuri Day celebrations on Saturday.

Among the freed prisoners is Weru Murithi, who was the longest serving prisoner after 41 years in jail.

The president said pardoned prisoners who committed crimes after being release from jail would spoil chances for others to enjoy the amnesty and make it difficult for society to accept them back.

“If you care for those you have left behind in prison, avoid criminal activities. Be an example to others and you will help other inmates to enjoy the presidential amnesty,” he added.

Prisons Commissioner General Isaiah Osugo and outgoing Interior Principal Secretary Monica Juma accompanied the pardoned prisoners.

Osugo said the prisoners have been rehabilitated and equipped with vocational skills that would enable them rebuild their lives.

The pardoned prisoners thanked the president for the act of mercy and assured him that they will be law-abiding citizens.
