President Kenyatta in Paris for Climate Change Summit

President Uhuru Kenyatta arrived in Paris, France, Sunday evening to attend the 2015 Climate Change Summit which begins Monday.

The plane carrying the President and his delegation touched down at Charles de Gaulle International Airport, Paris, shortly after 8:00PM Kenyan time.

The twenty-first session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) and the eleventh session of the meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (CMP11) will take place as from Monday to December 11th, 2015.

The Paris summit represents a historic opportunity to put the world on course to meet the climate change challenge.

COP21 seeks to deliver a clear pathway with short and long term milestones, and a system to help world governments measure and increase progress over time until they reach the goal of reducing carbon emission.

President Kenyatta will be among the over 140 world leaders including US President Barack Obama, China’s Xi Jinping, India’s Narendra Modi and Russia’s Vladimir Putin attending the summit widely expected to reach the first truly global deal to cut greenhouse gases.

Kenya is among nations which have been in the forefront championing for the reduction of greenhouse gas emission and in July this year it submitted its new climate action plan to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Kenya’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) set out a goal to lower greenhouse gas emissions cause dangerous anthropogenic climate change. Emissions include CO2, fluoridated gases, methane which are emitted by human activity such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels, and water vapour. by 30% by 2030, despite the fact that Kenya contributes a mere 0.1% to the total global emissions of greenhouse gases, greenhouse gas precursors, and aerosols associated with human activities, including the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, land-use changes, livestock, fertilisation, etc. (IPCC).

President Kenyatta jetted into Paris from Malta where he attended the 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
