President Kenyatta officially endorses Mariga for Kibra by-election

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday met Jubilee Party candidate for the upcoming Kibra Constituency by-election McDonald Mariga at State House, Nairobi.

The President, who is the Jubilee Party leader, assured Mariga of his full backing in the by-election set for November 7, 2019.

“The President wished Mr Mariga, who was accompanied by Jubilee Party Secretary General Raphael Tuju, success in the contest and assured him of his full backing,” said State House in a statement.

Also present during the meeting was Deputy President William Ruto, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and Jubilee Party Chief Whip Benjamin Washiali among others.

The endorsement of Mariga by President Kenyatta came hours after the former football star survived what appeared to be his last hurdle in his quest to vie for the Kibra parliamentary seat.

This was after the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal on Wednesday dismissed a case challenging Mariga’s nomination for the race to succeed the late MP Ken Okoth.

The electoral commission had also initially locked out Mariga from the by-election on grounds that he was not a registered voter, a decision that has since been set aside.
