President Kenyatta meets Western leaders to discuss development

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday held a working breakfast with governors of Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Trans Nzoia and Bungoma counties at Kakamega’s State Lodge to discuss development in their counties.

The president, who arrived on Saturday, opened the Lwakhakha border point, launched two water projects and also issued a charter to Kibabii University and affirmed his commitment to continue working with county governments to enable the devolved units realize their goals.

During the meeting, governors Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega), Moses Akaranga (Vihiga), Sospeter Ojaamong (Busia), Patrick Khaemba (Trans Nzoia) and Kenneth Lusaka (Bungoma) briefed the president on the projects they are undertaking for the benefit of their residents.

President Kenyatta said the national government would continue working with local leaders on re-opening the Webuye Pan-Paper mills, which was the economic hub of the Western region.

He further promised that more surveyors would be sent to Kitale in Trans Nzoia County to accelerate land adjudication in the area.

“Lands ministry is sending 40 more surveyors in addition to the existing 23 to complete adjudication in readiness for issuance of 100,000 title deeds by February next year,” President Kenyatta said.

The surveyors are to remain in Kitale until adjudication work is completed, he added.

Patrick Khaemba, Trans Nzoia Governor, told the president of the county government’s plans to expand Kitale Town, which is constrained by the surrounding forest.

Khaemba said he would work with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to provide alternative forest land to enable the town to expand.

The governor also noted that the county government would work with the national government to construct a new university in Kitale Town.

“Kitale Technical College will not be converted into a university as the county still requires tertiary institutions,” the governor said.

President Kenyatta further promised to visit Vihiga County and launch hospital projects.

He reaffirmed that he would work with all elected leaders without bias on political affiliation to ensure Kenyans benefitted from devolution.
