President Kenyatta mourns retired Archbishop John Njenga

President Uhuru Kenyatta has sent a message of condolence to the family and the Catholic faithful following the death of retired Archbishop John Njenga.

In his message, President Kenyatta said the late Archbishop was a true and faithful servant of the Lord who strictly adhered to his calling and never shied away from proclaiming what was right.

“The late Archbishop Njenga was a forthright servant of God. He always stood for what was right and just before God and men,” said the President.

“We will always cherish his work and service to this country and to God.”

The Head of State said Archbishop Njenga was a visionary leader who worked to improve education standards in the country as demonstrated by the many schools he started during his pastoral duties.

“When he was posted as the first bishop of Eldoret diocese, the Archbishop initiated 40 schools, this was no mean feat,” said President Kenyatta.

Archbishop Njenga was ordained as a priest in 1957 and posted to Kiserian Junior Seminary where he served for three years before being posted as the first bishop of the Eldoret Diocese.

He was later transferred to Mombasa where he was ordained as an Archbishop of the then newly formed archdiocese.

Archbishop emeritus John Njenga served in Mombasa for 18 years before retirement. He passed away on Sunday November 4 at a Nairobi hospital after a short illness and at the age of 90.
