President Kenyatta orders for another crackdown on illicit brew

Another drive to stop the consumption of illegal alcohol in Central Kenya will kick off next week.

The announcement was made Friday at the State Lodge, Sagana, where President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted leaders from the five counties in Central Kenya who were joined by their Laikipia and Nakuru counterparts.

President Kenyatta said the fight against illegal brews will this time be multi-pronged using the security apparatus, MPs and MCAs. The MPs and MCAs will support the war by passing the necessary laws to control the trade in illegal brews.

The President also urged the Judiciary to take a stand for the common good because the initial drive was mostly slowed down by numerous injunctions from courts.

“The law should protect life. It should not be used to protect those who are killing the youth,” said the President.

Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery said Chiefs have been empowered to deal with those who sell illegal alcohol and any officer who fails in his duty will be sacked.

Several leaders who spoke at the function had urged the President to back their wish to eradicate the problem once and for all.

President Kenyatta said the County Administrations now have the powers to tighten the noose on those who deal in illegal alcohol because they can use legislation to control them.
