President Kenyatta orders prosecution of Mumias thieves

President Uhuru Kenyatta has told those who misappropriated funds at the Mumias Sugar Company to return the money.

Speaking at Mumias Sports Complex during a ceremony to hand over a Ksh 1 billion cheque as part of the company’s revival programme, President Kenyatta told the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to arrest, prosecute and jail those guilty of ‘stealing’ from the sugar miller, and force them to return the money.

“I want to urge EACC to arrest those behind the financial woes in Mumias Sugar Company and force them to return the money, even if it means they will have to sell their houses,” he said.

The Head of State blamed mismanagement by previous company directors for the issues affecting Mumias Sugar Company plunging it into huge debts.

President Kenyatta noted that the new management that will be in charge of spending the Ksh 1 billion released today, Wednesday should know that they will be held responsible for any further embezzlement.

“The problem facing Mumias Sugar Company is not farmers but poor management. The team that will be handling the money we have brought today should know that they will be held responsible for any misuse.”

President Uhuru also urged responsible ministries including National Treasure to stop illegal importation of sugar to ensure the survival of local producers.

The event was attended by several political leaders from Western Kenya among them Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, the county’s senator Bonny Khalwale, Amani coalition leader Musalia Mudavadi and Budalangi MP Ababu Namwamba among others.

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, Acting Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Adan Mohammed, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and incoming Cabinet Secretary for Water and Irrigation Eugene Wamalwa were also present.
