Uhuru Kenyatta: Kenya has overcome test of democracy
President Uhuru Kenyatta now says that Kenya has overcome the test of democracy even as uncertainty reigns over the October 26 presidential election.
In a letter addressed to Kenyans, President Kenyatta maintains that the country must go to the ballot amid the current political situation that threatens a potential constitutional crisis following the Supreme Court ruling that annulled the August 8 presidential elections.
“In the weeks and months following the ruling, our peaceful co-existence and democracy have both been tested to the limit and ultimately as a nation, we have emerged victorious,” reads the letter.
The letter, dated October 19, is in sharp contrast with that of opposition leader Raila Odinga, who met with IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati and asked for the postponement of next week’s election.
“It is now clear that the condition in place cannot allow for a free and fair election,” said Mr. Odinga.
Raila has insisted that the repeat presidential elections will not be conducted unless reforms to the IEBC are done, and on Wednesday called for demonstrations on October 26, the set election date.
