President Kenyatta submits Martha Koomes name to Parliament for vetting

President Uhuru Kenyatta has forwarded the name of Court of Appeal judge Lady Justice Martha Koome to the National Assembly for vetting to the position of Chief Justice.

Koome, if approved, will officially take over the leadership of the Judiciary by May 25 this year.

While reading the message of the President to the National Assembly, Speaker Justin Muturi said it was paramount for the House to prioritize vetting of the nominee considering the importance of the Judiciary as an arm of government.

Amid cheers from the House, the Speaker read out the message that was accompanied by Koome’s resume among other necessary documents that will enable the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to vet her and table their report in Parliament for debate.

“The law requires us to take 28 days to vet this nominee, and so the committee should table their report on or before May 25, but considering the importance of Judiciary, the committee should prioritize the vetting,” said Speaker Muturi.

The committee, led by Muturi Kigano, is expected to put out a notice informing Kenyans of the vetting to allow for any memoranda for or against Koome to be tabled.

Koome will be expected to appear before the committee for vetting, thereafter the committee will table a report to the House for debate.

She floored 9 other candidates to emerge the most preferred in the interviews, and if approved she will be the first female Chief Justice and President of Supreme court.
