President Kenyatta tells off Governor Sonko over Miguna Miguna

President Uhuru Kenyatta appeared to have been in a foul mood on Wednesday when he told off Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.

Speaking at an event to issue title deeds to Nairobi residents, President Kenyatta seemingly asked the Nairobi County boss to desist from making veiled threats.

Kenyatta’s outburst came after Sonko brought up the thorny issue of his decision to nominate controversial Kenyan born-Canadian lawyer Miguna Miguna to the post of Nairobi Deputy Governor.

“Mambo ya Miguna Miguna isikutishe… mambo ya loyalty isikutishe kwa sababu tuna say kwa bunge la assembly na pia watu wako walikuwa wamenisumbua sana… wamenipiga left, right and centre lakini mimi ninakuheshimu na serikali yetu inakuheshimu na tuko na wewe tuhakikishe umeacha legacy hapa,” said Sonko.

Loosely translated: “Let that issue of Miguna not scare you. The issue of loyalty should not threaten you because we have the majority in the County Assembly and some State officials disturbed me a lot. They kicked me left, right and centre but I respect you and your government and we are with you to ensure you leave a legacy.”

“Mheshimiwa sonko amesema hapa eti mimi nisiogope nisitishwe sijui Miguna…mimi nataka nimwambie na niwaambie hata nyinyi…Mimi naheshimu kila mkenya, lakini sitishwi na mtu yeyote. Watu waelewe vizuri. Mtu asifikirie kwamba mimi ni mtu ya kutishwa tishwa. Kama ni vitisho tutaona vitisho zitazidi upande ya nani,” replied Kenyatta

(“Sonko has said here that I should not be afraid and I should not be threatened by the Miguna issue… I want to tell him and everyone else, that I respect all Kenyans, but I am not threatened by anybody. Let nobody think that I am someone who can just be threatened. If it’s about threats then we shall see who will be overwhelmed.”)
